What to Wear for Your Headshot Session - A Guide for Men & Women

Vancouver's first choice for Headshot Photography

General Tips for Everyone

Regardless of gender, some universal principles apply to choosing what to wear for your headshot:

  • Keep it Simple: Solid colors work best, as patterns and busy designs can be distracting. Stick to classic, timeless pieces.
  • Choose Colors That Complement Your Skin Tone: Neutral tones, deep blues, grays, and earth tones tend to be flattering on most skin tones.
  • Fit Matters: Avoid clothing that is too tight or too loose. Well-fitted clothing looks sharp and professional.
  • Minimize Distractions: Stay away from logos, graphics, and overly flashy accessories.
  • Consider Your Industry: A corporate executive might opt for a formal suit, while a creative professional could go for a stylish, relaxed look.
  • Layering Works Well: A blazer or structured jacket can add dimension and polish to your look.

What to Wear for Men

Shirts & Tops:

  • Stick to classic button-down shirts, avoiding overly bright colors or loud prints.
  • Solid white, light blue, and soft pastels work well for a clean, professional look.
  • Avoid shiny or reflective materials, as they can catch too much light.
  • If you wear a tie, keep it simple and avoid overly bold patterns.

Suits & Blazers:

  • If your industry requires a formal look, a well-tailored suit is a must.
  • Stick with classic colors like navy, charcoal, or black.
  • A structured blazer adds professionalism without being too formal.

Accessories:

  • Keep jewelry minimal and professional—simple cufflinks or a classic watch can enhance your look.
  • If you wear glasses, ensure they are clean and free of glare.

Grooming Tips:

  • A fresh haircut a few days before the shoot keeps your look polished.
  • A clean-shaven look or well-groomed facial hair adds to a professional appearance.
  • Moisturizing your skin can help reduce shine and keep you looking fresh.

What to Wear for Women

Tops & Blouses:

  • Solid colors work best; jewel tones like deep blue, emerald green, and burgundy are particularly flattering.
  • Avoid busy patterns, ruffles, or overly textured fabrics.
  • A tailored blouse or fitted top enhances your natural shape without being too tight.

Blazers & Dresses:

  • A structured blazer adds professionalism and depth to your photo.
  • Dresses should be classic and well-fitted, avoiding overly trendy styles.
  • Stick to knee-length or longer dresses to keep the look professional.

Accessories:

  • Keep jewelry simple and elegant—small earrings, a delicate necklace, or a simple bracelet work well.
  • Avoid chunky or overly trendy jewelry that might date your photo.
  • If wearing makeup, opt for a natural look with neutral tones and a matte finish.

Grooming Tips:

  • A light touch of makeup can help enhance your features, but avoid heavy or overly glossy finishes.
  • If you color your hair, consider a touch-up before your session.
  • A slight curl or wave in the hair can add a natural, flattering look.

Final Preparation Tips

  • Bring Options: It’s always a good idea to bring a few extra outfits to your session to see what works best under the lighting.
  • Test Your Outfit: Try on your clothing beforehand and take a few test photos in different lighting to see how they appear on camera.
  • Stay Comfortable: Confidence is key, so wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident.
  • Iron Your Clothes: Wrinkled clothing can ruin an otherwise great headshot, so make sure everything is pressed and neat before your shoot.
